Design and usability.

Some people like well designed websites, some don't.
The truth is that the design doesn't really affect your site at all.

A website with crappy design but good content will beat a well designed site with crappy content any day!
If you have browsed the Internet you may have found that many well known sites look really awful.
The best thing is to have something in between, I'm not saying you should write crappy content, but instead care as much for the content as you do about the design.

Take this site as an example again, it is very simple to use. No flashing animations, not that many colors or pictures/links everywhere. The information you want to know about is reachable within one or 2 mouse-clicks.
Many people makes the mistake of putting too many annoying links/animations on a site, thinking it will gain more visitors because it stands out. Oh how wrong they are...

Criteria for making a user-friendly website.

Well placed content:
Ads to the right.
Text in the middle or to the left.
Link menu to the left or top (only to the right if you have a blog).

Well chosen colours:
Choose 3-5 colours that will represent your site. This site has: black, blue, grey and red.
This is also for the logo on your site. Make the logo simple for users to remember.

No flashing materials:
Don't put a lot of animations that does not relate to your website.
Also do not make a website of almost only images. (not good for SEO)

Easy browsing:
Most users will leave a site if they do not find what they want within 3 mouse clicks.
Have that in mind when you create your site, put inbound links in your text for quick access to your other pages.
Always check for broken links, if you got a link that does not work, remove it or fix it.
It's really annoying for the users!
Get your own search function from google, to help your users find things on your site.
Remember, no misspellings or small text either.

Response time:
The maximum time it should take for a site to load is 10 seconds.
Images should be under 50kbs for a quick loading site.
Use the same link to the image if you are using it on multiple pages.
Don't make them too big, cut them down.
Good formats for images are: .Jpeg, .PNG, .Gif.
